Boeing initially said the 737 MAX would have a CFM International LEAP engine with a 66-inch or 68-inch fan, depending on a final decision about what's the best tradeoff between weight and efficiency. On Thursday, Albaugh said it would be 68 inches, which "really is a sweet spot for us ... in terms of fuel burn, drag on the airplane and also additional weight on the airplane."
The CFM LEAP engine also is one of two offered on the A320neo, but with a 78-inch fan, allowing the engine to run on less fuel. But Boeing reiterated its assertion the that 737 MAX will burn 4 percent less fuel than the A320neo and cost 7 percent less to operate. (Boeing says it will use 10 to 12 percent less fuel than current 737s, cutting operating costs by about 7 percent.).
