Default Thai Airways International taper penger for første gang i historien

For første gang i historien taper THAI penger.

Thai Airways president sidelined after $220m loss

THE Thai Government has called for an investigation into the third-quarter losses posted by Thai Airways International as the airline's board sidelined the president over the poor performance.

Kanok Abhiradee was suspended after reporting third-quarter loss of 7 billion baht ($220 million), citing the fuel prices as the main reason. The loss came after a 3.49 billion baht profit in the second quarter to March and 5.7 billion baht profit in the first quarter to December.

Somchaineuk Engtrakul, a former finance ministry official, has been named the interim president. He is expected to move to aggressively cut costs to improve the airline's balance sheet.

Transport Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal said yesterday a committee would be appointed to investigate the airline's finances.

Mr Pongsak dismissed Mr Kanok's claims that the high oil prices were the main factor for the financial downturn.
"We don't think the oil price factor alone could have contributed so much to such big losses," Mr Pongsak said.

The Thai Airways board, which had expressed shock at the bottom line results, believed the carrier was facing a critical financial situation. Thai Airways has been hit by the rise in fuel prices and a downturn in tourism to the key southern regions of Thailand following last December's tsunami and violence in the largely Muslim provinces near the border with Malaysia.

Reports suggest the carrier may suspend the acquisition of two new Airbus 340 aircraft due for delivery in December until 2006.
