UK sues over forest Korean Air jet crash
(Source : BBC, July 27, 2005) The UK's National Trust is to sue an airline over damage caused when a plane crashed in north Essex six years ago. The Korean Airlines' Boeing 747 jumbo jet came down in fields close to Hatfield Forest in Dec 1999 killing all four crew members on board. The National Trust, which owns the forest south of Stansted airport, says the accident caused extensive damage. An Air Accident Investigation Branch report concluded that the cargo plane crashed because of faulty equipment. A spokeswoman for the National Trust said: 'The compensation claim involves two stages. The first stage is to recover costs incurred when we closed Hatfield Forest in 2000 and the second is to recover the cost for the damage caused to the nature conservation of the forest.' The forest covers an area of 424 hectares (1,049 acres) and contains more than 850 veteran trees. Full Story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/essex/4720145.stm |
