PRELIMINARY RESULTS ANNOUNCEMENT

RESULTS REFLECT BLEAK TRADING ENVIRONMENT

British Airways today (May 22) presented its preliminary results for the 12 months ended March 31, 2009.

Period highlights:

· Operating loss of £220 million, including restructuring costs of £78 million (2008: £878 million profit - restated)
· Loss before tax of £401 million (2008: £922 million profit - restated)
· Revenue £8,992 million (2008: £8,758 million - restated)
· Full year fuel costs near to £3 billion
· Significantly better operational performance, particularly punctuality

British Airways' chief executive Willie Walsh, said:

"Reduced passenger and cargo demand and high fuel prices last summer contributed to our £220 million operating loss as our total fuel bill reached almost £3 billion. The prolonged nature of the global downturn makes this the harshest trading environment we have ever faced and, with no immediate improvement visible, market conditions remain challenging. It is vital, therefore, that we remain absolutely committed to our plans to establish British Airways as a high-performing, market-focused, global premium airline.

Financial review

Group revenue in quarter 4 was down 8.4 per cent to £1.9 billion on operating costs up 13.3 per cent, resulting in an operating loss of £309 million. Excluding fuel costs and the impact of exchange, operating costs were down 5.5 per cent in the quarter. Quarter 4 loss before tax was £331 million. Passenger revenue for quarter 4 was down 8.0 per cent. Yields were down 2.5 per cent, down 16.0 per cent excluding exchange.

Full year revenue was up 2.7 per cent to just under £9.0 billion (including £109 million arising from a change in estimation basis for unused tickets). Excluding year on year exchange effects, underlying revenue was down 3.7 per cent.

Passenger revenue rose 3.1 per cent to £7.8 billion, on capacity down 0.7 per cent. Seat factor was down 2.1 points to 77.0 per cent. Yields, however, rose 6.7 per cent as a result of currency impacts. At constant exchange, passenger yields were broadly flat.

The economic downturn led to a significant fall in global demand for premium travel, with IATA premium traffic down around 14 per cent (our premium traffic was down 13 per cent), in the second half of the year. Our premium traffic volume, which started to see some weakness back in August, has steadily declined in the second half in response to the economic slowdown. Significant pricing actions were required to stimulate non-premium traffic volumes, which were broadly unchanged year on year.

Total traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometres, was down 3.4 per cent. Total passengers carried fell by 4.3 per cent to 33.1 million.

Er disse eide maskiner? I så fall skulle det vel være muligheter for å få noen kroner i kassa, ihvertfall på 757'ene.

Willie Walsh: "We are taking action to mitigate the impact of the economic crisis on our business. Next winter we will continue to reduce capacity by taking out 4 per cent of flying compared to last year, parking up to 16 aircraft."

In response to trading conditions, capacity was reduced by 3.1 per cent in winter 2008 and 2.5 per cent in summer 2009 compared to the previous year. We will continue to reduce capacity by taking out around a further 4.0 per cent in winter 2009.

We have ordered six Boeing 777-300ER aircraft for delivery between 2010-12, and placed options for four more, to give us greater flexibility in our longhaul fleet following delays to our Boeing 787 deliveries. In addition, 11 Embraer aircraft have been ordered for our subsidiary CityFlyer to replace its current AVRO RJ100 and RJ85 fleet.

Our 11 mainline Boeing 757 aircraft have been sold for cargo conversion. The 757s will leave the fleet between 2010-2012 and be replaced by Airbus A320 family aircraft.

Dt er naturligvis alvorligt når et selskab som BA kommer ud med det resultat...men det er jo såadan over hele verden...JAL og SQ slider jo også med økonomien

Da har BA begynt å gjøre grep. Dermed forsvinner nå 1.class. Dette må ha satt langt inne, men det er vel et faktum at buisness-class nå er såpass bra, at det er "godt nok" også for de med mye penger.

Litt tabloid vinkling? 1.klasse forsvinner ikke, men det vil bli en større andel fly i IC flåten enn idag som ikke har det. BA har jo allerede idag 777ere uten first

Står følgende å lese i Guardian fra 22. mai (hvor jeg tror VG har sin "kilde"):

The long-haul aircraft that we take delivery of this year will not have any first class cabins in them," said Willie Walsh, BA's chief executive. He insisted there was no direct link to the recession, but he added: "Longer term we will review the configuration of [all] new aircraft." BA is also launching a service this year from Heathrow to Las Vegas, a prime destination for high-rollers, with no first class option.

De vil ikke ha 1.klasse på nye langdistansefly (777) de får levert i år. Dette var allerede avklart for flere år siden da flyene ble bestilt. Videre står det at BA i lengre perspektiv vil gjennomgå/revurdere konfigurasjonen på alle NYE fly. Hvordan man da kan tolke dette til at man skal kvitte seg med 1.klasse på ALLE fly lurer jeg litt på

Virgin Atlantic has reported a sharp rise in profits in the year to the end of February, bucking the trend seen by other airlines.

Annual pre-tax profits reached £68.4m ($109m), nearly double the £34.8m seen in the year earlier.

It said the results had been helped by a rise in premium fare passengers.

The results are in contrast to other airlines, including British Airways which reported an annual loss before tax of £401m last week.

Og kan man ikke kutte så må man forsøke å fylle flyene koste hva det koste vil. Det er vel det vi ser hos de fleste selskapene ut fra LHR om dagen.

De kutter ut NYC fra LGW fra slutten av oktober, men starter samtidig opp ruter fra LGW til MLE og SSH.

British Airways is to launch new thrice-weekly direct services from Gatwick to both Male in the Maldives and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt from October 25, 2009.

This will be the first time British Airways has flown to the Maldives, but will be a return for the airline’s colours to the Red Sea resort.

The routes will be operated by Boeing 777 aircraft with a three-class configuration: World Traveller, World Traveller Plus and Club World.

Other changes to the network include the cessation of the London Gatwick to New York flight from October 25.

British Airways operates up to ten daily flights to New York and will launch the first ever London City - New York service later this year

Lead-in fares from Gatwick to Male will start from £629 return including taxes, fees and charges. Flights to the Maldives will depart from Gatwick on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 7.10pm returning from Male on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 1.20pm local time.

Lead-in fares from Gatwick to Sharm El Sheikh will start from £339 return including taxes, fees and charges. Flights to Sharm El Sheikh will depart from Gatwick on Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 10pm returning on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 11am local time.

British Airways last served Sharm El Sheikh through its franchise operator GB Airways, which was sold in March 2008.
