Southwest posts back-to-back quarterly losses
(Source : USA Today , January 22, 2009)
Southwest suffered a rare second-consecutive quarterly loss. The airline reported Thursday that it lost US$56m last quarter. However, it made a profit for all of 2008, earning $178m for the year. That keeps intact a string of profitable years dating to 1973. The profit was diluted by $117m in Q4 charges mostly tied to fuel contracts bought earlier in the year before oil prices plunged. In all, Southwest's 2008 earnings were down 72% from $645m in 2007. The carrier last reported back-to-back quarterly losses in Q4 1990 and Q4 1991. In Q3 2008 it reported a net loss of $120m. Excluding one-time charges, Southwest earned a small Q4 profit of $61m. That was down 33% from Q4 2007, but better than what analysts had expected on average.
