The US$164m question: Which airline collects the most baggage fees?

According to DoT statistics, American collects the most airline excess-baggage fee revenue. Through the first nine months of this year, American collected more than US$164m in baggage fees. American is the largest US airline in terms of passenger traffic, but the fees American collected are disproportionately higher than the larger number of passengers on the carrier. For example, American's passenger count is running 49% higher than United this year, but American's baggage-fee collections have been more than double the $74.2m United collected. There may be all kinds of differences at airlines to explain the baggage revenue disparities other than simply aggressive policies and unyielding ticket-counter agents. American, for example, is the biggest airline to Central and Latin America, and those flights often are stuffed with excess baggage.
