Default EgyptAir to join Star Alliance

EgyptAir to join Star Alliance

At a joint ceremony held in Cairo today, the Chief Executive Board of Star Alliance has voted to accept EgyptAir as a future member,

- Egypt is one of the most important aviation markets in Africa, with a large potential for both business and leisure travel. We are proud that EgyptAir, a world class airline, has chosen to join Star Alliance, thereby recognizing the importance of alliances in aviation today, commented Jaan Albrecht, CEO Star Alliance.
- EgyptAir provides an ideal network fit for Star Alliance and will permit many more passengers to experience the alliance's customer benefits especially in markets, in which Star Alliance was up to now under represented, Albrecht continued.

In order to implement the Star Alliance "Move under one Roof" concept at Cairo Airport, EgyptAir and the Star Alliance member carriers flying to Cairo will move to the new Terminal 3 once it opens in 2008

Within the integration process now underway, EgyptAir is set to become a full Star Alliance member carrier within the next 18 months. EgyptAir will add nine additional unique airports into Star Alliance network, bringing the overall total to more than 17,700 daily flights serving 944 destinations in 161 countries. (Figures are based on current 17 member carriers and the four carriers set to join soon - Air China, Egypt Air, Shanghai Airlines and Turkish Airlines.

EgyptAir was established in May 1932 as the first airline in the Middle East and Africa and the seventh to join IATA. In 2004, EgyptAir demonstrated the scale of its commitment to the highest standards of safety by being the first IOSA certified airline in the Middle East and Africa.

EgyptAir making final changes as Star membership approaches
Friday April 4, 2008
EgyptAir Chairman Atef Abdel Hamid said the carrier's effort to meet the requirements for Star Alliance membership is nearing conclusion and it expects to be ready for a Cairo joining ceremony scheduled for July.

"We still have some challenges to meet the last standards of a Star Alliance member," Hamid told ATWOnline this week in Istanbul. He said training of certain staff and some minor adaptations to its IT infrastructure are still on the docket but will be completed on schedule.

Other changes are in store as well, including a new brand and livery. "We are in the process to present our new brand very soon on one of our aircraft. No later than May we will show our new colors," he said, adding that the brand will reflect the "spirit of Egypt" and the carrier's effort to make Cairo the principal gateway to Africa and points in the Middle East. "We have to work hard. All this is not a matter of money. This is necessary to present the world a new quality carrier," Hamid said.

Star Alliance begynner å bli imponerende stor nå, og det er bra de forbedrer tilbudet i Afrika - som jo ikke har vært så veldig bra.

EgyptAir er vel ikke akkurat noe som frister meg stort å fly med. Men bevares. Jeg kan ta feil, jeg!

EgyptAir Express sin dekor kan vel muligens gi et hint om hva vi har av vente hos Egypt Air.

Egyptair becomes 21st member of Star Alliance

At a ceremony in Cairo today, Egyptair officially became the 21st member of Star Alliance bringing with it 1,624 weekly flights to 69 destinations around the world. Egyptair is the nation's flag carrier, and will strengthen the alliance's network throughout Africa and the Middle East.

The announcement at the Cairo International Airport marked the end of a nine month integration project in which the airline adapted its reservation, ticketing, frequent flyer and other customer-oriented programmes to work more closely with the infrastructure of the other members of the alliance.

As a major part of its increased role as a hub, the Cairo Airport Authority is completing work on a new terminal. When Terminal 3 opens this fall, it will be a dedicated Star Alliance terminal serving passengers of seven Star Alliance members. The new terminal will have a capacity to serve 11 million passengers annually.

About Star Alliance:
The members are Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, bmi, Egyptair, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Spanair, SWISS, TAP Portugal, Turkish Airlines, THAI, United and US Airways. Regional member carriers Adria Airways (Slovenia), Blue1 (Finland) and Croatia Airlines enhance the global network. Air India has been accepted as a future member. Overall, the Star Alliance network offers nearly 18,100 daily flights to 975 destinations in
162 countries.

About Egyptair:
Egyptair is the world-renowed national airline of Egypt, based in the cosmopolitan city of Cairo. In more than 75 years, Egyptair has experienced extraordinary growth, taken the lead to be the first airline in the Middle East and Africa and the seventh in the world to join IATA and become a treasured brand.

Egyptair operates more than 1,624 weekly flights to 69 cities in 44 countries carrying more than 6.8 million passengers a year. Currently, Egyptair has one of the most modern fleets with an average of eight years, which consist of 50 aircraft targeting to reach 75 aircraft by 2013.
In 2004, Egyptair demonstrated the scale of its commitment to the highest standards of safety by being the first IOSA certified airline in the Middle East and Africa.
