Italian airforce C27 med typhooneskorte til Prestwick

En C27 fra det italienske flyvåpenet blei eskortert til å lande på Prestwick (PIK) etter problemer med radiokommunikasjonen over Skottland. Typhoonjagere blei sendt opp for å avskjære flyet.

A MAJOR operation is ongoing at Prestwick Airport tonight - with reports of armed police on the tarmac awaiting an incoming flight.

Emergency crews are thought to be receiving an Italian military aircraft. It is understood the operation involved a flight that lost communications.

Yes it's a QRA Alert!! The Italian Military MC-27J Transport plane has had a Communications failure since it departed Glasgow Airport earlier .. It's has been flying around the North of Scotland trying to solve it problem but enough was enough and a QRA Alert was activated it was then escorted by two Typhoons & an A330 Tanker to land at Prestwick .. When a QRA is in operation the airport is in lock down. Why Prestwick ? Because it has the skills locally to repair the fault plus it isolated approach is ideal if something had to ditch in the sea.. Also Prestwick can operate normal using the cross runway for its scheduled traffic.

Noen som vet hvorfor de gjorde klare bøttevis med væpnede politifolk? Fryktet man kapring eller noe lignende? ( et av bildene viser en liten arme politifolk og biler oppstilt å klare). Eller er det rutine?

Heraldscotland skriver i dag:

"The plane lost communication and air traffic control didn't know why.

"At that stage, it could be anything, from a technical fault to something more sinister, and that is why it needs to be treated with such caution."
