Etter ett tiår med vurderinger har Brasil bestemt seg for å kjøpe 36stk Gripen NG

After a decade of discussion, Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff announced on Wednesday the acquisition of 36 Gripen NG fighter jets, from Sweden’s Saab (STO:SAAB-B), for the FX-2 program of the Brazilian Air Force. Defense Minister Celso Amorim and General Juniti Saito, the air force's chief of staff, will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. EST, for the official announcement.

The decision puts an end to 10 years of speculation and delays on the transaction, which started as a plan under former President Luiz Inácio de Lula. Three contenders stepped up to the bid: France’s Dassault (EPA:AM), with the Rafale model; Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) with the F/A-18 e/F Super Hornet; and the eventual winners, Saab with the smaller Gripen. In the early stages of the negotiation, Lula expressed preference for the Rafale, but the French contender fell out of favor at the end of Lula's second and last term in 2010, and was finally rejected on Tuesday due to its high cost.

Jag tror medparten av Gripen flygplanen kommer slutmonteras av Embraer i Brasilien.

Hm, kan svenskene takke en viss fyr som har asyl hos Putin for denne avtalen her? Brasil var ikke veldig happy med at Obamas menn sitter og smuglytter. Uansett synes jeg det er imponerende at et land meg 8 mill innbyggere lager jagerfly!

Ingen stor overraskelse at det ble Gripen, Rafale var for dyr og med tanke på at forholdet mellom Brasil og USA ikke akkurat er på topp for tiden så var ikke Superbugen aktuell lenger heller.

Litt overrasket over at de skal kvitte seg med Mirage 2000 etter bare 6-7 år i tjeneste. Og hoppet fra Mirage 2000 til Gripen kan da ikke være så stort?

Er ikke sikker på om det bare er Mir200o som skal erstattes.

This site builds sections of Gripen, which will then be delivered to the final assembly facilities at the Embraer plant in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo, Brazil and to Linköping, Sweden.

Da har det første Gripen-flyet ankommet Brasil. Turen over Atlanteren til Navegantes i delstaten Santa Catarina gikk med skip. Deretter ble flyet tauet til hangaren. Som seg hør og bør i Brasil ble taueoperasjonen voktet av godt bevæpnede soldater.

Saab this week announced that the Gripen E—a major enhancement of the original Gripen fighter design—has now entered the delivery phase. Six serial production aircraft have left the factory and are now being prepared and tested prior to delivery to the aircraft’s two customers.
