Iceland Express to link Copenhagen with Akureyri
Victoria Moores, London (23Feb06, 16:09 GMT, 219 words) Budget carrier Iceland Express is to launch services between Akureyri in northern Iceland and the Danish capital Copenhagen, as it prepares to take delivery of its first Boeing MD-90. Since its inception Iceland Express has connected Reykjavik with Copenhagen but the budget carrier is now planning to link the Danish city with Akureyri, Iceland’s second-largest city. Iceland Express will initially offer a weekly service on the route, which is due to begin on 30 May. But from 15 June it will double this frequency. The Icelandic budget airline has expanded cautiously, serving only London Stansted, Copenhagen and Frankfurt Hahn from Reykjavik since its launch in 2003. But under different management, the airline’s network is set to grow this summer. This growth will be met using three Boeing MD-90s, new to Iceland Express. These aircraft, sourced from Swiss charter carrier Hello, are due to arrive at the rate of one per month from 1 March. Iceland Express previously operated Boeing 737s from Icelandic company JetX. Last summer it operated two of the type, but slimmed to one for the winter season. This final aircraft will be returned with the arrival of the first MD-90. New routes to be implemented from May include Alicante in Spain, the German destinations of Berlin Schoenefeld and Friedrichshafen, and Gothenburg and Stockholm Arlanda in Sweden.
