Seaplane crashes off Miami Beach Rescue crews search waters after propeller craft goes down Miami (Florida) Air and Space Accidents Airlines or Create Your Own Manage Alerts | What Is This? MIAMI BEACH, Florida (AP) -- A seaplane carrying at least 16 people crashed off Miami Beach within sight of the city's high-rises Monday, killing at least 12 of those aboard, authorities said. Scuba divers and rescuers in speedboats struggled to reach the victims. Because of witness reports of an explosion before the propeller-driven plane went down, the FBI sent agents to assist in the investigation, but there was no immediate indication of terrorism or sabotage, said Judy Orihuela, spokeswoman for the FBI's Miami field office. "It's too soon to say whether we are going to get involved," Orihuela said. "We're just going to check it out." The Chalk's Ocean Airways plane went down around 2:30 p.m. in a channel used by cruise ships. The Coast Guard said it was carrying 14 passengers and two crew members, while the local Fire Department said 17 passengers and two crew members were aboard. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Chris O'Neil said at least six bodies were recovered. Javier Otero, Miami Beach Fire Department support services chief, said there were survivors, but it was not immediately clear how many. "We're still trying to get people out of the water," Otero said. Law enforcement officers searched for victims via boats and helicopters and were joined by others in private boats, on Jet Skis and on surfboards. A witness, Frank Amadeo, told WSVN-TV that he saw a huge explosion in the sky and the plane fall behind a condominium tower on Biscayne Bay in Miami Beach. The Coast Guard said the cause of the crash was not immediately known, and it could not confirm whether there had been an explosion. The National Transportation Safety Board said it will investigate. Otero said the plane was one that regularly flies to and from the Bahamas, but he did not immediately know whether the aircraft was incoming or outgoing. TV helicopter footage showed debris in Government Cut, the channel that ships take past South Beach into the Port of Miami. Chalk's Ocean Airways was founded in 1919. Its floating planes take off on the water. Chalk's aircraft have been featured in TV shows such as "Miami Vice." Founded by Arthur "Pappy" Chalk, the airline thrived during Prohibition, taking bootleggers, their customers and customs agents to Bimini. One of its planes was hijacked to Cuba in 1974 and the company has since had a policy of not carrying enough fuel to get to Havana. Two years later, the airline was sold to Resorts International, which owned properties on Paradise Island. Donald Trump bought it in 1988 and sold it a few months later to Merv Griffin. The owner as of 1995 was Seth Atwood of United Capital Corporation of Illinois/Atwood Enterprises. According to FlightSafe Consultants' Airline Safety Web site, Chalk's has had no known fatal accidents. Similarly, the NTSB database shows no fatal accidents for Chalk's since 1982, when the database started. The airline had no comment after the crash. |

Trist - dette er flyene som fikk vekket interessen for luftfart. Stod hver lørdag ved skipsrekken og så flyene lande og ta av mellom Port of Miami og Watson Island.
--- 12 Said Killed in Plane Crash Off Miami MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A seaplane carrying at least 16 people crashed off Miami Beach within sight of the city's high-rises Monday, killing at least 12 of those aboard, authorities said. Scuba divers and rescuers in speedboats struggled to find survivors. "It's too soon to say whether we are going to get involved," Orihuela said. "We're just going to check it out." The Chalk's Ocean Airways plane went down around 2:30 p.m. in a narrow channel used by cruise ships, crashing on takeoff during a flight from Miami to the island of Bimini in the Bahamas, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown said. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Chris O'Neil said at least 12 bodies were recovered. He said rescue crews saw no immediate signs of any survivors. The Coast Guard said the twin-engine Turbine Mallard was carrying 14 passengers and two crew members, while the Fire Department said 17 passengers and two crew members were aboard. Coast Guardsmen and emergency workers wearing protective suits hauled bodies up from rescue boats. Law enforcement speedboats, divers and helicopters took part in the search and were joined by others in private boats, on personal watercraft and on surfboards. Chalk's Ocean Airways flies between Miami and the Bahamas, using planes that take off and land on the water. Chalk's aircraft have been featured in TV shows such as "Miami Vice." Its seaplanes take off in view of the port and the multimillion-dollar homes that dot islands in the bay. Founded by Arthur "Pappy" Chalk in 1919, the airline thrived during Prohibition, taking bootleggers, their customers and customs agents to Bimini. According to the airline, its most famous regular passenger was Ernest Hemingway, who flew to Bimini to go big-game fishing. According to its Web site, Chalk's operates 17-passenger Turbine Mallards. According to FlightSafe Consultants' Airline Safety Web site, Chalk's has had no known fatal accidents. Similarly, the NTSB database shows no fatal accidents for Chalk's since 1982, when the database started. The airline had no comment after the crash. **************** Grumman Mallard Turboprop Down Off Miami Beach, PAX Deaths Confirmed Conflicting Reports Of Death Toll, Survivors There are confirmed reports of eight dead in the downing of a Chalks's Ocean Airways Mallard as it was landing in Miami following a flight from the Bahamas. Sixteen passengers and three crew members were aboard the aircraft, according to Fox News. A number of small boats and jetskis on the scene when the plane went down in Government Cut assisted Coast Guard and Miami Fire Department efforts to recover bodies from the accident scene. There was initially a large debris field from the accident, although much of the field has been dispersed by strengthening currents in the Cut. Local reports say 12 bodies have recovered from an accident just off the coast of Miami Beach, where a seaplane carrying as many as 18 onboard went down at approximately 2:45 pm EST. There are conflicting reports as to any survivors, with varying reports of two to six passengers now at local hospitals. Coast Guard CPO Dana Warr told CNN he witnessed the aircraft take off, and nothing seemed unusual. He then saw a plume of black smoke, however, and warning bells sounded. "I get chills, thinking I saw this aircraft and everything seemed okay... and then we're on a rescue effort," said Warr. Three Coast Guard boats and choppers searching the water for additional survivors. The aircraft went down in Government Cut, the channel that ships take past South Beach into the Port of Miami. The seaplane was flying for Chalk's Ocean Airways. According to the Chalk's website, the airline was founded in 1939 and today flies a fleet of PT-6-equipped Grumman G73 Mallards (above) to the Bahamas and Nassau from Miami.

Chalks grounds Mallards three days after fatal crash
Joe Singleton, Washington DC (22Dec05, 22:22 GMT, 129 words) A US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) official confirms that Chalks Ocean Airways has grounded its fleet of Grumman Mallards following a December 19 crash near Miami Beach, Florida that killed 20 passengers and crew. The grounding comes as the NTSB completes its initial on-site investigation. NTSB investigators have found significant fatigue cracks in the crashed Mallard’s right wing spar, which reportedly detached just after takeoff and burst into flames. The safety board’s spokesman also says the aircraft’s cockpit voice recorder was destroyed on impact, and that no data could be retrieved. The fatigue cracks, the aircraft’s maintenance record, and the age of the aircraft - which was built in 1947 - will be major factors as the NTSB investigation continues at the safety board’s headquarters in Washington DC. Vingebjelken så SLIK ut.
NTSB sa at kun en spesiell undersøkelse ville avslørt sprekkene. ![]() Har lagt en post i sjø-avd, siden denne tråden snart forsvinner bakover i rekkene (før den blir flyttet). Selv en moderator må få lov å ha juleferie.
