Oppslag i Bangkok Post i dag Don Muang has successful reopening (TNA) -- After a closure of nearly six months, passengers travelling within Thailand Saturday welcomed the reopening of former international airport Don Muang here with nine flights testing the airport by making a landing Saturday evening. Final touches have been made on the first floor which houses the passenger arrival lounge while workers are busy decorating the second floor where restaurants and souvenir shops will again occupy the area. One-Two-Go Airlines flying from the southern resort of Phuket will be the first budget commercial aircraft to touch Don Muang as it is scheduled to land at 6.10 pm followed by eight other flights operated by One-Two-Go and two other carriers, Orient Thai and Nok Air. Starting Sunday, Thai Airways International, the national carrier, will join the three airlines in operating incoming and outgoing domestic flights from Don Muang, closed since September 28 following the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok's neighbouring province of Samut Prakan. Transport authorities have said the reopening of Don Muang will help ease congestion at Suvarnabhumi Airport as its taxiways and main terminal undergo repairs. There are over 100 cracks in the runways and taxiways at the new airport which is intended to be Southeast Asia's commercial aviation hub. The new Suvarnabhumi airport has been plagued by several problems and corruption allegations. |

Og litt mer fra denne "nyåpningen" .. av mer triviell art
![]() Også sakset fra Bankok Post OLD AIRPORT / HEADACHES EMERGE OVER NAME The Don's agreed, but is it Muang or Mueang? AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK An airport official inspects the installation of lights to illuminate a sign at Don Muang International Airport, though with the spelling "Don Mueang". — JETJARAS NA RANONG As the old airport in North Bangkok prepares to reopen for certain domestic flights tomorrow , a new question has emerged. But this is not about runways or possible transfer headaches. Instead, it's about how to spell the name of the airport using the Roman alphabet. Passers-by might be surprised to see signs at the domestic terminal, saying Don Mueang instead of Don Muang, as it had always been written in the past. The confusion over the spelling is clear in promotional materials of the national carrier, Thai Airways International. A recent advertisement in local newspapers cited the name of the airport using the new spelling, but the airline's website is spelling it the old way. The ad says ''Smooth as silk via Don Mueang for THAI domestic flights,'' but a headline on the website reads: ''THAI announces domestic operations at Don Muang airport.'' But despite some misgivings that others may have over the change of spelling, airport director Pinit Saraithong has insisted that Don Mueang is the correct way to spell it using Roman characters. After an order from the government and Airports of Thailand Plc to move domestic flights from Suvarnabhumi back to the 93-year-old airport, one of Mr Pinit's first questions was how to spell the name of the airport correctly in English, he said. ''Until now we never had this name. We only had Bangkok International Airport as the official name,'' he said. But the official name of Bangkok International Airport was passed to the new Suvarnabhumi airport when it opened last year, which meant the name Don Muang, as it had been unofficially known in the past, would now become the old airport's official name. So Mr Pinit turned to linguistic experts, including the Royal Institute and Chulalongkorn University's faculty of arts, to garner advice on the English spelling of the old airport's name. All experts he spoke to at these and other language institutes agreed it should be Mueang, not Muang as it had always been before, he said. ''This problem gave me such a headache,'' he said. ''Now I have to keep all evidence with me to back up that decision.'' The airport will offer services for all domestic flights by One-Two-Go and Nok Air tomorrow . THAI is also moving most of its domestic services to Don Mueang. One-Two-Go and Nok Air will test the airport by landing some inbound flights at the old airport this evening . Welcome to Don Mueang airport. |

og så åpner de snart for internasjonale flygninger .. og kaoset kommer til å bli komplett ;-)
Don Muang may host overseas flights again (Thai News Agency) Thailand's main airport regulator will soon discuss the possible restoration of international flights at Don Muang Airport, which officially reopened for domestic flights on Sunday, according to a senior official. Admiral Bannawit Kengrian, head of the National Legislative Assembly committee investigating Suvarnabhumi Airport problems, said that Airports of Thailand plans to renovate passenger lounges for international flights at Don Muang Airport while it awaited a clear policy from the government. Adm Bannawit, who advises the AoT board chairman, said the board is expected to confer on services to be provided to international airlines at Don Muang during its next meeting. Don Muang Airport was closed last September 28 on the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok's Samut Prakan province. However, it was officially reopened today for domestic flights as the authorities believe it could help ease congestion at Suvarnabhumi Airport while workers repair cracks in taxiways and runways and build more restrooms and other facilities at the new airport. Gift shops and restaurant facilities at Don Muang are not yet furnished but Adm Bannawit said he was optimistic they could be completed within a week. The reopening of Don Muang has sent joy to vendors and motorcycle taxi drivers as they hope their earnings would increase. Tawatchai Kompairee, a motorcycle taxi driver at Don Muang, said his income had dropped sharply after the closure of the airport almost six months ago and he wanted the government to keep Don Muang opened forever. Mala Ngernsunthia, a coffee-shop employee at Suvarnabhumi Airport, said she traveled between the new and old airports daily and she hoped that her employer would open a branch at Don Muang if more airlines operate there. If her dream materialises, she said she would not have to travel as far as now. |

TG not happy after move to Don Muang -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Airline loses customers after moving airports By Boonsong Kositchotethana Thai Airways International's decision to move a large part of its domestic services to the old Don Muang airport has resulted in a loss of tens of thousands of passengers who require connecting flights. The flag carrier could have lost as many as 70,000 foreign travellers, who were transferring from international flights to domestic destinations or travelling from domestic routes to overseas, since THAI started operating through the 93-year-old airport on March 25, according to insiders. These travellers have turned to other carriers due to the hassle and long wait in connecting with international flights - all of which run through Suvarnabhumi Airport, a time-consuming 27 km away. Many of these passengers who may travel on THAI flights from abroad have instead used the domestic services of Bangkok Airways and the budget carrier Thai AirAsia, which have continued to operate all flights through Suvarnabhumi. THAI operates 31 domestic flights a day through Don Muang, offering more than 8,000 seats a day, while retaining 11 flights a day at the new airport. THAI is one of the three local airlines that opted to offer domestic flights through the old airport after the government earlier this year decided, following several policy flip-flops, to reopen the old airport for non-connecting domestic services to reduce congestion at Suvarnabhumi. The other two players at Don Muang are THAI's budget subsidiary Nok Airlines and the local no-frills airline One-Two-Go, both of which did not experience similar problems to THAI.The response from connecting passengers has caught the national carrier's management off-guard as they believed that domestic flights allocated at Suvarnabhumi should deal with the connection issue for foreign travellers. The THAI domestic flights retained at Suvarnabhumi, which the airline anticipated to require connections to international destinations, are those from popular tourist spots such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket and Krabi. The business loss prompted THAI's board to discuss the issue at its Monday meeting. No easy solution is seen though some executives said the airline may be compelled to cut some flights at Don Muang and return them to Suvarnabhumi. THAI may be reluctant revert to Suvarnabhumi because it spearheaded the campaign to reopen the old airport. THAI has spent about 20 million baht to re-establish its presence over at Don Muang. Industry analysts said THAI's loss of connecting passengers reflects a major flaw in operating dual airports within close proximity. The use of two airports has increased the flight transfer time in Bangkok from between two and three hours to between five and seven hours. Critics said THAI may have underestimated the impact of passenger connectivity to its business as statistics show that there are always passengers on every THAI domestic flight who need to transfer to international flights. THAI shares closed yesterday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 46.50 baht, down 25 satang, in trade worth 51.36 million baht. |
