Two injured in Nok Air 737 evacuation
Leithen Francis, Singapore (06Feb06, 06:46 GMT, 219 words) Two passengers were injured yesterday after a Nok Air Boeing 737-400 that they were travelling on ran off the end of the runway at Bangkok airport following an emergency landing. The aircraft departed Bangkok for Phuket at 13:48 but when it reached 1,500ft an unusual noise was heard from the right wing, after which the engine on that side of the 737 lost power, the Thai low-cost carrier says in a statement, adding that the captain then decided to return to Bangkok. “Upon touchdown there were apparent issues with the brake system and the aircraft went off the end of the runway and…came to rest on a grassy area,” says Nok, which is part owned by Thai Airways International. Two passengers suffered “minor injuries” during an emergency evacuation of the aircraft. There were 110 passengers and five crew on board. Cause of the technical problems is now under investigation and Nok claims that even though the aircraft ran off the runway it sustained no damage. A spokesman for Nok in Bangkok says the aircraft involved in the incident is the fourth aircraft that joined the carrier’s fleet and its manufacturer’s serial number is 26611. According to Avsoft’s ACAS database Thai owns 26611 and the aircraft’s registration is HS-TDD. Nok Air’s fleet comprises four 737-400s, all on lease from Thai.
