Quote:
On Tuesday July 16, United Airlines became the first airline to fly and retrofit an aircraft with the new Split Scimitar Winglets. A United Airlines Boeing 737-800, N37277, took to the skies over Washington on Tuesday to test and begin the FAA certification process of the new design.

Split-tip winglets have been talked about before, but yesterday’s flight was the first time an airline has flown with them. The first design emerged in the mid-1980s when the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was proposed to replaced the cancelled double-decker MD-12. But, they never proceeded with the design.
