BBC har en interessant artikkel der man beskriver hvordan sikkerhetssystemene fungerte slik som ønsket: Den ene vingen løsnet når man overskred en gitt belastningsgrense. Dette bidro til å holde flykroppen intakt. I tillegg holdt passasjersetene seg fast i sine posisjoner, slik at man unngikk at seter med passasjerer fastspent ble slengt rundt i kabinen. Sist men ikke mins gjorde kabinbesetningen en fremragede jobb med å få passasjerene raskt ut av flyet.
